Series Timeline & History
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha - 20 Years of History
The Beginning
The origins of “Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha” trace back to the adult visual novel Triangle Heart 3 Sweet Songs Forever, released in 2000.
Nanoha Takamachi, the younger sister of protagonist Kyoya Takamachi, appeared as a “magical girl” in bonus scenarios and other supplementary content. This parody-like setting proved popular and became the catalyst for the anime adaptation.
The first season of the TV anime, which aired in 2004, went far beyond simply reusing characters. It fused the sci-fi element of recovering “Lost Logia (ancient relics)” with rich drama centered on family and friendship, building a world entirely its own.

From Magical Girl to “Mage”
Season 1 (2004) - Encountering Magic
An ordinary third-grader, Nanoha meets Yuuno Scrya, a boy from another world, and becomes involved in recovering the rampaging relic known as the “Jewel Seeds.”
The medium for magic, “Raging Heart,” was depicted not as a simple magic wand but as a “computational device” equipped with advanced AI that communicates with its wielder. This concept carries through the entire series, leading to the scientific and military interpretation of magic that defines it.
A’s (2005) - The Impact of the Cartridge System
The second season cemented the series’ popularity. The “Belkan style” Cartridge System was introduced—a mechanism that achieves instantaneous high power output through physical magical ammunition loading.
The treatment of magic as “computational science” and “technology” became clear here. The term “magical girl” gave way to “Mage"—a professional, military designation. Characters came to be depicted not as simple magic users, but as specialists wielding advanced combat techniques.
StrikerS (2007) - Military Organization and Professional Warriors
Moving the setting ten years into the future, Nanoha and her companions appear as 19-year-old instructors of the “Time-Space Administration Bureau.”
The story shifted from personal battles to career development within a massive bureaucratic organization, training subordinates, and organizational criminal investigations—essentially a military police drama. This sincere portrayal of changing social roles as characters age is something unique to this series.
The Scientification of Magic
What this series brought to the magical girl genre was the transformation of magic from “mysticism” to “technology.”
Where previous magical girls were fantastical beings symbolizing fairies, dreams, and hope, the Nanoha series defines magic through “energy output” and “precise computational formulas.”
Tactical Magical Girl
From StrikerS onward, mages serve as soldiers in a military organization, ranked by classification (S-rank, AAA-rank, etc.), grappling with promotion and training of successors. This deconstruction and reconstruction of the magical girl motif into “professional warrior” found a wide audience among military and sci-fi fans—well beyond the traditional magical girl demographic.
Generational Succession
The series has depicted the growth and changing roles of its characters—from elementary school years, to time as 19-year-old young instructors, to their role as mentors for the next generation.
A Story of Inheritance
- ViVid (2015): Vivio, Nanoha’s adopted daughter, takes the spotlight as protagonist
- Force: Deeper sci-fi world-building and more intense combat
- EXCEEDS (2026): The story of legendary mages who lived through the catastrophe 30 years ago and the new generation
In EXCEEDS, how will Nanoha and her companions—legendary mages who experienced the catastrophe—and the new generation living in its aftermath share or clash over the “value of magic”? The series’ recurring theme of “inheritance” is about to take a new form.
Fan Community Culture
“Befriending”
Overwhelming an adversary with full-power magical bombardment (Starlight Breaker and the like), then becoming best friends—a pattern iconic to the fan community, known simply as “Befriending.”
Changes in the New Series
The word “Vengeance” in the subtitle of EXCEEDS has sparked lively debate about what changes it may bring to this traditional reconciliation pattern.
